Very bright and useful lamp.
Wasn't sure I would keep it based on the price before I actually tried it, but I've left it in my truck for a couple of weeks and have already used it for so many situations. The ability to go from spot to flood has been awesome. I've used it to do anything from working on my truck at night, dropping and easily finding nuts and bolts, chasing down the dog at night, getting to the right spot before sunrise on hunts. I can't imagine what I'd do without it at this point. The one annoyance is you need to click the white light through the 3 settings in order to turn it off vs. other models I have had with pressure switches allowing a soft touch to cycle settings and hard press to turn on/ off to the last setting it was on. I have to put my hand in front of it to ensure it is actually off and not in the lowest setting. It is nice to have a battery saver option if ultra bright isn't needed I suppose. At least it doesn't have the useless and annoying strobe setting. The red light only has one setting, on or off which I like, but the red brightness is fairly useless compared to cheaper models I have.Still all around I'm very happy and feel it was worth the extra spend.

Bright, battery life short.
I use this headlamp for auto repair. It works as intended and is plenty bright. The beam is adjustable from wide to spot which is nice and can be tilted up and down. It has 3 light output setttings as well as a red light to preserve night vision which I've never used. I do wish the light output was completely user adjustable like their HL7 headlamp but not a deal breaker. The battery pack is in the front thus makes is easier to lay on your back and work vs my other Coast headlamp with the batteries in the back. There are some drawbacks: with the batteries being in the front it almost makes it too heavy unless the headband is tightened snug. The problem with that (at least for me) is it's not padded enough for my forehead so I keep it looser and can sag. The lamp can be a bit obtrusive due to the size. There are times when I'm trying to get my head in the wheel well or something and the lamp bumps into things before my head is even close enough and prevents me from getting good/close direct vision. Lastly, the battery life is horrendous. It has a quoted 2 hour life in high and yes, it would probably shine for that long but about an hour in the light becomes too dim to be usable in most situations I find. With this many lumens and only 3 AAA batteries, I'm not shocked.Overall a good buy. Maybe a rechargeable model will come out soon. But being able to put new batteries in and not wait for a charge comes in handy.

This is THE ONE, seriously.
This is THE headlamp to get, I ordered it along with the Black Diamond Strom for comparison, but the Coast is by far the better of the two!!Ps, get the dual color! Why I think its the best:-The brightness is INSANE! Seriously, like a spotlight. Having a light this bright at your disposal is actually a bonus safety feature...were there to be something scary out there they literally wouldnt be able to approach you with this light in their eyes.-The adjustable beam can go from a nice diffused spread of light for close up, to a long distance beam with a quick and intuitive twist, it's super easy to use. And with a twist even the Low setting can send out an impressively far reaching long distance beam, which is nice when you're doing something around camp in low light mode and hear a noise...you don't have to cycle through anything to immediately see something far away...just twist and go.-The lowest setting of white light is perfect, not too dim or bright-Not only does it come with RED LIGHT, but the buttons for red and white are independent, one side is for red light and the other is for white...seems like a small thing but its super important not to have to cycle through white light to get to red if you're trying to preserve your night vision. What could improve:-There really isn't anything functional that needs improvement here, only the style seems to be a bit less "modern" than the competition...but that's the competition's gimmick, thankfully I bought the Coast FL85 anyway!!

A great headlamp
I never thought I would buy--let alone--praise any Coast product. This is my second Coast headlamp. The first one I bought did not have a zoom setting. and the led's weren't as bright---but still it was very bright. The battery life was longer. This head lamp is brighter..it has three settings and night vision,, plus it goes from wide angle to zoom. On the third setting, it begins to lose it's brightness after about 10 hours...it's still plenty bright to walk a trail at night.. but you can notice the difference...I use mine every night for about 30 minutes.. I change the 3 AAA bateries every two months.Coast is a very good product

My favorite headlamp
My favorite headlamp now, and I've bought about 5 different kinds of LED headlamps these last 3 years.-BRIGHT at the 'Hi' setting. Plus has med and low setting. Low setting is about equivalent to a bright bulb type headlamp.-Wide to Tight beam adjustment, and everything in between. When set 'wide', the light is spread out VERY equally, and if tacked to the 8' ceiling of a 12x12 room, it would light the whole place up.-Operation is completely easy and intuitive. On/off button is easy to find and use, for both the main light and the red led light panel. Wide/Tight dial is also easy to find and use. Wide/Tight is easy to change, but is snug enough so it can't change on it's own.-It's tough enough to handle rough treatment.-Headband holds the light onto your head effectively, and the light fits comfortably against your forehead, even when wearing it for hours.-Headband adjusts for big heads, up to size 8 for sure (I know because that is my hat size).
