Complete French

The arrived on time. Packaging was great. Overall the quality of the book is great. It contains grammar, vocabulary with lots of exercises. Moreover, you can enhance your study with the app along with the book contents. Which is pretty helpful. Highly recommended for the people who wants to learn French.

This is an excellent book series

I use this program to re-learn French and learn Spanish and it is a very good book series. You will need a dictionary because although it helps you move slowly along, there is a need for supplemental material like a dictionary and a book of verbs. You can learn a verb, for example, but not know all the ways it can be used. Does the verb take a preposition like “to look at”, or is it different in the foreign language? An example of how languages can get complicated in case this helps you.

Good compliment to other sources

Using this as a companion with a paid duolingo subscription. They compliment each other well and I love exercising a different part of my brain without the use of a screen. The app from McGraw hill is very bare bones but it does help when you want to hear the pronunciation of something in the book. Like a lot of language learning materials you’ll need to branch out by consuming media, conversing, making flash cards, etc, but this is a good tool in the toolkit

Very helpful reference, but...

Using this book in conjunction with Babbel and Duolingo has been very helpful; however, chapters 23 and 24 are all physically mixed together

In need of an index

I was very disappointed in this book. It has no index and only a very rudimentary table of contents, thus it's really hard to consult about any specific question you might have--such as when and when not to use "de", or when is the article omitted. The commentary would be interesting if you were at a highly advanced level but is was overwhelming for this reader (at the intermediate level).

My favorite of the Practice Makes Perfect series

I'm studying French on my own using a variety of sources. This book is exactly what I needed to supplement my lessons. It is comprehensive, clearly-written and provides great exercises to reinforce my learning. I highly recommend it.

This review is for the Kindle version, only.

As far as content, I’d give the book 10 stars if I could. J’ai étudié le française pendant deux années aux lycée about 4 decades ago. Subsequently, I dropped out of the U of Mn’s Institute of Technology largely because I’m dislexic and couldn’t do the reading required in some of the general education courses. Today I drive truck. Thanks to modern technology; accessibility enabled smart phones, Kindle, etc., I can now listen to textbooks and intellectual material. I’ve recently taken some college courses, listening to the textbooks (Je ne les ai pas lus - bleh). And can listen to French talk radio in Paris; RMC, Europe 1, France Culture, France Inter, etc.The Kindle version of Practice Makes Perfect has some issues. My smartphones; an iPhone and an Android phone; try to determine the language in the text, and then use the correct voice. Android, upon finding French text, tends to stay with the French voice all the time even when the language it’s pronouncing is clearly English. My iPhone determines the voice to use based on the language it finds at the beginning of each page. It would be tolerable if the accent was the only thing missing with word pronounciation being reasonably close. But the English voice pronounces être, “it’er”. It pronounces “qui est-que ce”, “key estate suh kay”. You can imagine my dismay as I desperately tried to recall from high shool French “it’er” and “key estate suh kay.” ?????Enfin, most of the explanation examples were images, which Kindle announced as “image”. So the voices told me what to do with “it’er”, “key estate suh kay”, et. al., but left practial usage examples visually inaccessable to someone who spends all of his work day driving.I highly recommend this book. But only if you can read it. However, if you’re a stand-up comedian and need some material, playing the audio version will get you some hearty guffaws.
